Revisal of annoying Blackmire wisps

I like the visuals of these purple wisps, but what are they and why are they kamikaze bombing me so mercilessly? Their behavior feels... unexplained and illogical, which could be fixed with some lore texts to be found. Are they predators, enemies of the Flame? Are they protecting an invisible hive or food source? Or do they want the magic in my blood (then they should drain my mana first)?

To make their existence more logical and enriching, you could add a quest from a lore book (where someone complains about them) which explains their behavior and perhaps even allows you to do something about it, with the result of getting one for a companion pet which follows you around and light the area for you.
This would be a great addition, but should be offset with something like an effort to keep it glowing (if it starves it mutes), such as reserving part of your mana while it follows you. A mutually beneficial symbiosis! There should be more of those in games. It's a great concept.
