Grappling Hook - Freeform vs Contextual
I would love to see the grappling hook system move to a freeform (aim) system rather than based on predefined locations.

OrionoxFreeform grappling hooks are fun, but they have the potential to invalidate a LOT of exploration. With that in mind, I think you could give grappling hooks an ammo requirement. Make the ammo not exactly hard to make, but not super abundant either. Like make it require explosive berries or spores or something that is uncommon.

NteyThat would kill all exploration puzzles that is in game already (The ones that requre you to get to top of ancient spires, and also some of ancient tombs with NPCs have some grappling stuff) So no-no

SebastianWould love an unlock freeform hook but with limits. Much shorter range compared to the contextual hook (lvl1), Needing to craft explosive ammo to shoot. (lvl2), then a late game, QoL long hook for those players loving to build and just exploring the world they spent so much time in. Long, long hook that take mana(lvl7) If done, add a dungeon exception when there is a puzzel nearby so it wont destroy the experience of exploitation.

WolfinVanHowlerHonestly i like this suggestion a lot. I mean hear me out, What if you could use the grappling hook in a camera aim systemic way that allows tactical movement in fights or use of speed gliding across gaps or a speed boost to get a boost in the air, like used in just because 4. Now addressing as the comment mentioned Ntey, while being able to do so having a limitation like grapple restricted grid zones. More detailed explanation of what i mean is by what ever means the map is generated in a point by point grid like system have the selected zones (majority of the map where its not needed for puzzles and such be allowed use of it. And than restricted in areas where the player would than have to use their puzzle solving skills to assess the obstacles and complete the puzzles without it. Kind of like Zelda breath of the wild in a sense.

Nessy MergedCurrently grapple points are very situational and makes it hard to care at all about upgrading it since it's almost never used.

Removing grapple points and allowing players to grapple hook onto anything allows more freedom of exploration and movement plus an incentive to upgrade it.
Another point is that swinging on grapple hooks feels too slow and stiff, like you're on rails and not swinging on a rope. -

YNHT MergedWould love the grappling hook to be a aimed and self-utilized tool rather than a "hookpoint only" tool. Would add a lot to traversal

JulesPERHAPS if the grapple hook was both free-aim, AND could only be used on certain targets/materials (E.G. the Hookshot from Ocarina of Time). You could hide bits of wood in places to grapple up to, make it even more in-depth to explore places instead of just looking for an E prompt!

AvatarThe grappling hook is one of the biggest disappointments of the game for something that should be a super fun to use item. I understand that things like climbing aren't in the game because it would get around puzzles and some of the exploration, but there needs to be some sort of solution here because the one in the game is almost not worth having there at all. Almost. You may as well have called it a whip you can swing from, Indiana Jones style, at least that would have given players different expectations. Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword actually did this, and it worked.

LeeKeep it as is, but freeform you can grapple anything but it won't pull you up.

That way we can combine gliding and swinging to get to keep up the faster traversal. -

Jihaku Mergedgrappling hook goes from being just a interact button, to a actual traversal tool you can use like the glider. It would be fine if you have to unlock the ability to later, or the range is shorter than interacting with hooks in the world.
The glider becomes a absolute traversal beast, while the grappling hook fades into obscurity as of now. Even if the grappling hook could be used on terrain, it could, at most - be equal to the Glider. When you get the final - Final glider, you will fly over 1000km from one place to another. If you get the glide skill that lets you lift yourself into the air, the grappling hook becomes even less relevant.
Lastly because stealth route are dependent on grappling paths usually, this would open up more stealth and vertical options from the ground, creating a alternative niche instead of just finding a high enough place to start boosting myself with the glider, or flying over all obstacles.
it would be fun as hell too, just like the glider already -

Cat's Eye MergedMore usable features for the hook:
1
Climb up steep surfaces,
Attract_to/Pull enemies.
Some functionality that would affect movement, combat systems. -

Nikolas Morey Mergedflying enemies are nice to fight if you have ranged attacks but are a pain when melee. Also just cool. if you're grounded and grapple it the creature crashes to the ground. If you jump or are in the air it launches you towards it.

LivewithJohnTo add to this the anchors need to be worked on, especially when they accidentally pull you away from things, the pull up anchors need to make sure that they don't just slam you into the anchor and drop you. There is almost no way to recover from this if its up slightly high, you are either going to be dropped to your death, have to randomly glide somewhere you aren't trying to be, or put into an even worse combat situation than you were in before because you are now disorientated.
This is also an issue when putting them up in your base, even if you are trying to use them if they don't actually pull you up you just hit your head and die when you hit the ground, or again end up gliding way to far away because you can't use the double jump except for a split second after the first jump and glide is the only option. -

JoshuaWiebelhausmaybe you can only grapple onto certain types of materials, that way puzzles in the game could still work but you could swing from trees, cliff faces and other stuff in the open world.

EtimushThe grappling hook has the potential to elevate this game, think Just Cause levels of fun. I understand that freeform grappling will probably ruin the puzzles built, but they were not too hard in the first place. Maybe grappling onto the grapple points stays the same
but onto any surface, it has a chance to fail, or fail mid grapple, and cost a lot of energy. Like grappling onto loose rocks or a feeble branch can break it, whereas the grappling points are solid.
Alternatively, grappling just works on anything, but slamming into the object you grappled to will cause massive damage. So grappling becomes a skill-based timing activity. Longer grapples speed you up more and do more damage. Maybe monetum is maintained when you exit the grapple as well. requiring even more skill and timing to use correctly. -

superpebblehave different grappling hooks. a long range grappling hook that cant be deployed every second that one can swing from any surface. a zip grappling hook to reach the tops of small houses and buildings. combat grapple, a hook that one can use to zip small enemies to the player and zip the player to the enemies. this gives specific options for players to choose from that makes them scratch their heads on what to take with them.

Awesome AustrianMaybe its possible to make a Legendary grappling hook you can find like the Ghost Glider.
And this hook can be upgraded with stats for using to different materials?
First LVL is using for wood surfaces
Second LVL can be attached to stone
and so on...
