Wards vs Shields having different advantages and disadvantages

I think it's a missed opportunity to not have Wards entirely block magic attacks but weak to physical attacks and regular shields entirely block physical attacks but weak to magical attacks. The only real benefit of the wards is the element resistance. This way it would lend a lot more to choosing which attacks you'd rather block and which you'd rather evade/roll to avoid.
