Make player homes a safe space from hypothermia in the mountain biome.
As the title states. Being in the mountain biome, inside my home should be safe from hypothermia. It doesn't make sense to be suffering from hypothermia while sitting next to a fireplace in my house.
Maybe do a check to see if the character is sheltered,warm and inside the altar zone to have the timer disappear until leaving the home.
Appreciate everything you guys are doing!

Toast Admin PinnedHaving your flame altar be level 8 does indeed protect you from the cold. If you'd like other ways of warming up at your base, please make another (more specific) ticket :)

KitsuniBeing around any fire in the wilds should give cold resistance and going inside a build, specially if there is a fire should either give you alot of resistance or completely remove the need.

GreenDragon3141It's not very well known as not many players have done it yet, but if you upgrade the flame to level 8, the frost timer disappears while you are in building range of an altar.

ZatchOn the same idea, I've seen a few times where I got near a torch/fireplace/etc that I had "warmth" for getting a rested bonus but the frost timer was still counting down. It should be impossible to get hypothermia if you are in "warmth"

GIANTENEMYBIRDYou actually CAN build in the snow biome hypothermia areas without having the debuff IF your global flame level is the max of 8. With max level flame of 8, you can be within the build range of your altar, and you wont have the hypothermia debuff. Flame lvl 7 I had the debuff while in range. Flame lvl 8, I do not. I've tested this a lot.

HarvallANY space where you are sheltered, warm, and with comfort (the three checkmarks are ticked) should recharge your freezing meter. And being insde building area should not matter. It does not make any sense that they dont, How else would lore-wise the raiders, bandits or whatever you call them be warm in those high up places. If i clear a bandit tower and sit near their campfire i should be able to recharge

KalnaurFlame level 8 allows this to happen, and even gets rid of the frost pattern on blocks for anything in range of the altar. It's a nice reward for reaching that far.

JebbMaking the hypothermia mechanic the same as the shroud mechanic is a huge mistake in my opinion. This mechanic is perfect for the shroud, just annoying for the extreme cold.
You are about to die of cold, but instead of finding shelter, the "gameplay" forces you to run to a ledge like an idiot, and jump into the valley or teleport. In short, flee. To come back to continue your exploration. Hit and run. Where's the fun in that?
You have to kill the last boss to build in these places? And that's a "reward"? Why isn't this a mechanic that would allow me to survive the extreme cold? Why do I have to finish the game for that?
The peaks are a hostile place. That's fine and it should be. But you have to learn to fight against it during the progression in the zone. Not when it's over. The extreme cold is not an enemy you fight against, it's a wall. And it's such a wasted potential.
Harvall's proposal seems to me to be the most appropriate. Finding shelter should be a necessity when in the peaks -

JossMake it known early in the game that upgrading altar to level 8 will protect from the frost effect. (I wanted to upvote the request on that page, but now knowing that, I think it's fine as it is.)

MattI would hope that since this is still EA that the mechanic will serve for further exploration later. But as it is now, defeating the dragon (endgame boss) to be able to survive in your own base in the northern zones just feels like a waste. There will be a good number of people that once they beat the dragon, will go find something else to play. Some building would occur but not to the degree that it was when the player was pursuing the story.

Paul JAgreed, also with Harvall's and Jebb's comments. This shouldn't be a boss reward (wut?), this should be a design reward. Cold? Build a shelter, put up something that gives frost resistance. Wanna reward players who put in effort? Increase the timer with the amount of +Frost Resistance items built and pause the timer completely past a certain point.
This rewards thinking and effort, not "hurr durr i beat teh boss". Bosses should drop level-appropriate gold chest tier items, that should keep them nice and relevant. -

CaelTotal agreement here. When I was trying to get musk oxen I built a base when I was low on frost resistance and added glassed in windows doors and a large hearth. adding all this was a waste of time. My timer kept counting down. After that I just threw in a altar to act as a place marker, and fast traveled home. return, deactivate the altar and kept on going. I agree players building a suitably weather proof dwelling (meaning actual doors and glass windows if you included windows and a good source of heat) should be rewarded with a rest spot to shed the chill and reset the survival timers.

superpebblesimilar to the shroud, the cold is an environmental hazard. I think a lot of these comments were spoken out of ignorance towards manufactured game conflict that goes against the theme of this game. sure some extensions should be considered like placing camp fires to war the player while out in the wilderness may be a welcome addition to the game or carrying a torch while traveling to slowing the cold timer by a finite amount. negating it entirely while out in the wilderness should be out of the question but I do agree that players should be able to negate the cold while in proxy to a heat source while in their base location. but I want to express that there should be a emphasis on upgrading hearths/fireplaces or wall torches should extend the radius of a safe warm place than simply making the base location a safe spot. this should also affect planting greenery outdoors in unheated areas with vegetation that is not of that that biome.

AndyI agree that you should be able to "warm up" near a fire to reverse the frostbite timer - maybe have an upgraded camp fire you build ("bonfire") that is hot enough to clear your timer similar to how your "rested" buff is restored in the right conditions - it doesn't have to be easy, make it only placeable inside the build radius of an Altar (then you no longer need it once you kill the Dragon and upgrade your Altar to level 8).

bluegreen1024It seems like some (many?) of the commenters may already be aware that Flame Level 8 grants frost immunity within altar range, and they're suggesting that it should be based on physical shelter and warmth instead. Given the number of comments and upvotes this suggestion already has, can the OP be changed or else this thread merged into a new suggestion that better reflects the current state of the game and the suggestions?

PyraThe Forge of Obsidia protects you from cold if you are right near it. I have a base there I can pop into to reset the timer, then pop back out to a more northern base to continue exploring.

PaulJAgreed that this should be tied to flame sources, and NOT the global flame level. Kill the boss and now suddenly you don't have to care about frost? Ridiculous. Players should be rewarded for putting in effort to stave off the cold i.e. by crafting heat sources. Give each fireplace item an effective warmth radius or something, where your frost timer slowly increases while you remain within range.

M BiscottiI was wondering if building a house would protect me against the "cold shroud" but I read here that we get protected after having finished the game. Maybe at release we'll have a "level 9" shroud with water biome but now it's completely pointless. I'll just put "altar protects against cold" in the "useless feature" box, with some gems.

This would make more sense thematically, i think (you don't die next to a fire), would give you incentive to carry around some campfires (or craft them on the fly). And you can for example put a camp down to stop for mining. All great things, i would say.
People can always cheat the system anyway with altars, but i don't want to remove the whole frost experience challenge, as other suggestions imply. -

TBeing sheltered and next to fire and still freezing makes no sense whatsoever. That and such an absolute garbage of a boss fight that is required to upgrade to lvl 8 made me quit the game.

Anyone home?How can you be getting rest from having "Warmth" but be stricken by Frost???? What kind of logic is this? If you have a house, and you are able to increase it's temperature, this should stave off the frost. I mean, you can stay warm in an igloo!
